Animal Healthcare Center Addition & Renovation
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium
The Healthcare Center currently provides for five distinct functional zones: administration, treatment, research, convalescent holding (including isolation) and quarantine; all of which were grossly undersized due to the growth of the zoo over the past 25 years.
In order to maintain the simple and direct circulation since many of the patients are quite large and must be tranquilized to be moved, the addition of a large treatment room, CT room, imaging zone, intensive care suite and convalescent holding had to be carefully thought out, all while the hospital remained active.
Because a wide variety of species are treated, each of a different size, temperament and biology, both the convalescent holding and quarantine functions are subdivided into three separate holding zones. Each zone has a separate ventilation system, durable wall and floor finishes and specialized caging to match the characteristics of the particular animal housed.
